A Russian lawmaker is urging Russian women to use caution when engaging in romantic affairs with foreign men during this year’s World Cup.
In an interview with Govorit Moskva, a Moscow radio station, on Wednesday, Tamara Pletnyova recommended that her fellow countrywomen avoid casual flings, citing a concern of unplanned pregnancies.
“There probably will be girls who will meet (foreign fans) and have children,” Pletnyova told the radio station, according to a translation by The Associated Press. “Maybe there will be such girls or maybe not, I hope, maybe they will think better of it.
“I know that children suffer if they are abandoned and they are left here with the mother. … Who will marry (them)?”
Pletnyova, the head of a parliamentary committee about family, women and children’s issues, also said she would prefer that Russian women marry fellow Russian citizens and raise their families in the country.
